what do you want out of this relationship you say
and i say nothing but
can you read it in my eyes?
i want to go away
far away from you and everyone that
i may or may not love,
surround myself with strangers—
their smiles no less artificial
than the ones at home.
and then maybe, you look into my eyes
after a year or two
i will come back to the same
dusty old train station
in the same small fragile town
and there you’ll be
you won’t ask me for an explanation
(you won’t need one)
and before i know it you will have
swept me up in your arms and
i’ll be flying in the blue of your eyes.
carefully
like a frog which was born in a well
who only knows of the two-foot sky
that encompasses his universe.
and i see i have already lost you—
in the space of
an imagined year
in the ideal
that was so much better than reality.
you say nothing as well,
and where there used to be blue in your eyes
there is now a curious emptiness.
